Description:
Women in India is a detailed portrayal of the problems faced and hardships undergone by women in various domains of day-to day life such as family, workplace, etc. The book is designed to provide the readers a whole body of information on this topic at one place. The diversity of the issues addressed in this book brings together authors belonging to different academic specializations, which has resulted in providing a holistic approach to the broader issue at hand.
Instead of following the paradigms often influenced by patriarchal values, the book looks at the issues pertaining to women purely from the women’s perspective, resulting in what one would call an ‘insider’s’ point of view’. Though this book has evolved as ‘by the women and of the women’ it should in no way deter any man interested in women’s issues from going through its pages.
Globalization brought in a whole new set of opportunities and values that caught women off guard and shook their opinions. This book portrays the problems faced by Indian women in keeping pace with the rapidly evolving society and accompanying social values. Among the issues discussed are:
• Female foeticide
• Women's education
• Domestic violence
• Structural violence by patriarchal systems
• Portrayal of women in print and electronic media and literature
• Micro-financing and development of self-help groups
• Indigenous technology for women's aid
• Witch-hunting and survival strategies in tribes, rural, and urban corporate world
The book aims to serve the long-felt need for a kaleidoscopic perspective on women's issues in India.
