Description:

Three crippling social perils: epidemic deaths, untouchability and illiteracy. Three impediments that threatened Malabar Church unity: the Roccos schism, blind westernisation and eastern extremism. There were problems all around, but Saint Chavara visualised only solutions. Over time, these solutions grew into missions of humanity, across the globe. They became schools, colleges, universities and spiritual and cultural centres. Here is the saga of Kuriakose Elias, a kalari-bred boy from Kerala, the southernmost tip of India, who became Saint Chavara and transformed the society in which he lived into a powerhouse. In this illustrated book historians, journalists, cultural activists, poets and philosophers take a close look at this extraordinary human being who carried out his tasks with resolute dedication and whose accomplishments are legion.

GREAT VISIONARIES PAINSTAKINGLY CONCEIVE IDEAS

Saint Kuriakose Elias Chavara was like a torch that brightly shone in the wilderness and darkness of nineteenth century Kerala society. Under the searing light of his vision, the social and educational map of Kerala changed considerably.
Saint Chavara distinguished himself as a social reformer and educationist. He is much acknowledged for his many literary works on diverse topics. He was not a preacher-priest but rather a doer-priest. A saint with a universal vision, he was a leader who was gentle but firm. Like Midas he turned into gold everything he touched and in fact there was nothing he didn?t turn his hand to.
He was indefatigable. With unflinching courage that a true Christian spirit gave him, he battled almost singlehanded against the evils of society. He stood in the thick of the fray holding the cross of his Lord and singing His praise. The way was long, strewn with thorns, and danger lurked in every corner. But the saint marched on, spreading sweetness and light. He taught a strife-torn world what Christian charity meant.
It is more than a century since Saint Chavara left us. We have moved on. Society has changed a lot. Yet, he continues to inspire all those who yearn to make the world a better place to live in.
