About the Authors:
Dr. Feroz Ahmed retired as Professor of Physics from the Department of Physics & Astrophysics, University of Delhi. During his illustrious academic career, he travelled widely. He was visiting Professor at the University of Florida, U.S.A., Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan and Mushashi Institute of Technology, Japan, to mention a few. Dr.Ahmed worked as Visiting Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, U.S.A., Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S.A., International Centre For Theoretical Physics, Italy and Institute of Atomic Energy, Hungary. He has been an Associate Member of International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. He was a member of Indian Nuclear Society and Semiconductor Society of India. Dr. Ahmed has participated in several national and international Seminars/Conferences and has delivered invited talks within and outside the country.
Dr. Ahmed has published more than 70 research papers in reputed international journals. Under his supervision 10 students successfully completed the work for their Ph.D. He was awarded U.G.C. Emeritus Fellowship in 2002. He served as Honorary Coordinator of Prof. D. S. Kothari Centre for Science, Ethics and Education, University of Delhi from 1997-2005. He is co-author of a book which has been recognized as the only comprehensive book written by Indian authors on the subject of Nuclear Reactors. He has edited four volumes comprising various writings of late Prof. D. S. Kothari.
Dr. Ahmed held several administrative positions in the University of Delhi. He has been University representative on the governing bodies of various colleges and a member of a number of apex bodies and Advisory Committees. He has been Honorary Secretary of Delhi Education Society and a member of the Majilis-I-Talimi (Academic Council) of Jamia Millia Islamia. He is Vice-President of Anjuman Farogh-e-Urdu, besides being associated with several social and cultural organizations.
Suresh Garg has been Professor of Physics at Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi since 1993. He served as Commonwealth Distance Science Expert at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji from 1996 to 1998. He was appointed Director, School of Sciences in 1999 and Pro-Vice Chancellor in the University in 2002. Currently, he is Acting Vice Chancellor of IGNOU.
He is member of several national and international professional bodies like Indian Association of Physics Teachers, Indian Distance Educators Association, CASTME-Asia, and ICTP-India. He is Secretary, Global Mega Universities Network (GMUNET) and SAARC Consortium for Open and Distance Learning (SACODiL). He is serving on academic, research and management boards of several universities in the country. He has co-authored two books in Physics, edited five books on different aspects of distance education, and published several research papers in national and international journals of repute. Since 2003, he has been the Chief Editor of Indian Journal of Open Learning published by IGNOU. Between 2001-04, he was an Editor of Global E-Journal of Open, Flexible and Distance Education and is Guest Editor of Staff and Educational Development International. Since September 2005, he is one of the Editors of AAOU Journal on open learning. He has travelled abroad widely and spoken on various topics. IGNOU has broadened its national presence and international networking, particularly in Africa, SAARC countries and Middle East with his efforts and guidance at the International Division.
Prof. Garg believes in evolving innovative practices and as academic content coordinator (Honorary) of South Asia Foundation, he helped develop a Post Graduate Diploma Programme in Environment and Sustainable Development for offer by Open Universities in the SAARC region. He has successfully completed several education, training and research projects for capacity building. He was team leader of UNDP-DOPT project for capacity building of Indian bureaucrats through distance learning, ComSec project on Science and Technology for Conflict Resolution and Peace, UNESCO project for science education in elementary schools, IPR Project of MHRD, among others. He has been an active member of the research group executing projects with Manchester Metropolitan University, UK and GTZ, Germany.
