Description:

Believing and Belonging: Critical Essays on British Muslim Fiction, a collection of eleven critical articles, examines at length the articulation of the raging issues of identity, terrorism, gender parity, diaspora and co-existence in the novels of these contemporary British Muslim novelists: Leila Aboulela,
Robin Yasin Kassab, Monica Ali, Qaisra Shahraz, Mohsin Hamid and Sarfraz Manzoor. The volume focusses on these Muslim writers’ espousal of the cause of Islam and Muslims and on their attempts at the recontextualization between modernity and Islam.
Islam is the largest religion in the United Kingdom after Christianity, occupying around 4.4 per cent of the entire population. This proliferation is also a witness to the rising Islamophobia. The beliefs of the religion have been often mistaken as and give rise to prejudices. Radicalism, rigidness and resistance are only a few of the labels that the religion is identified with. The eventual rise in British Muslim literature has nevertheless addressed Islamophobia at the global level.
Believing and Belonging: Critical Essays on British Muslim Fiction discusses and brings to light the works of some of the contemporary British Muslim novelists like Leila Aboulela, Robin Yassin-Kassab, Monica Ali, Qaisra Shahraz, Mohsin Hamid and Sarfraz Manzoor. With eleven critical commentaries, the book voices the issues around islam as an identity and the question and challenges that ensue, like those of culture and diaspora, politics, terrorism, Islamophobia and globalization.
Believing and Belonging is a collection to welcome onto the world stage of Muslim literary studies.” Claire Chambers (from the Foreword)
